INTRODUCTION

The complex procedure for designing a given landfill can be divided in five major design steps, as follows:.

- establishment of goals and design data including among other things determination of solid waste quantities and characteristics, areas to be served; planned life, user profiles; growth data

- compilation of information for [the various] potential sites including but not necessarily limited to topographic and boundary surveys, base map, hydrological and geological information, meteorological/climate data, applicable regulations and standards

-  Sizing of filling area including landfill method selection ( e.g. area method vs trench method), cell specifications, liners, interim soil cover, final cover, equipment and personnel requirements

Specific features such as leachate handling, gas recovery apparatus,  monitoring systems, recover/recycle operation, landscaping

Package preparation, i.e. plans, diagrams and documents
